I started from a love for classic motorbikes. I restored and worked on them from a young age. This gave me the skills to pursue an MA in Sculpture from Winchester School of Art. There, I developed my techniques with materials such as metal and wood. After university, I trained in education to teach Fine Art and Graphic Design. I worked in the sector for 9 years. I decided to leave the stresses of education. Now, I work within the residential building trade. Since then I’ve been developing a wide range of skills, and increasing my river knowledge. This includes training as a lock and weir keeper with the Environment Agency. I also spent much of my younger life working on dolphin tours and fishing vessels in New Zealand.

I have lived on the water for the past ten years. During this time, I have developed a solid understanding of what a good balance of modern day comforts requires. It also requires being environmentally friendly in this lifestyle. Over time, I have increased my green credentials for off-grid living. I did this while traveling as a live-aboard boater. I have tried various methods, such as water filtration systems and renewable energy sources.

I formed Tortuga Marine Services to help boat owners and enthusiasts access and enjoy the UK’s inland waterways safely and responsibly. Our focus is on promoting compliance, safety, and respect for the environment, ensuring that everyone can experience the unique character and natural beauty of the UK’s rivers and canals with confidence.

Over the years, I’ve expanded our services to include Marine Surveying, Boat Rescue, and Re-floating operations, primarily across the River Thames. These services draw on extensive experience and a deep understanding of the waterways, helping to keep boats and their owners safe.

I’m also passionate about helping new and younger boaters find the right vessel for their needs and guiding them toward becoming knowledgeable, compliant, and responsible live-aboard owners.
